Mastiffs - Choosing a Reputable Breeder
Mastiffs are not always readily available. A number of reasons can explain this. First, Mastiffs are not so widely spread like some other breeds of dog. Their maintenance is rather costly since it involves not only considerable amounts of premium foods, but also veterinary bills, and other expenses.

Second, these dogs are particularly hard to breed. A steady build and massive heads characterize all of them. Large heads and broad shoulder blades cause delivery difficulties. That is why Mastiffs often need cesarean. The number of puppies in a litter is not large. Mastiff puppies are born fragile and need careful treatment. Mastiff breeders should be aware of some dangers when handling puppies. It is inadmissible to hold them by their legs since it can damage their frail bones. A breeder should also make sure the dam does not harm its offspring. Mastiffs are so huge that can easily crush the newly born.
You should not also forget about Mastiff health problems. Get a list of diseases Mastiffs are prone to and find out what kinds of tests are recommended for stud dogs and brood bitches. Mastiffs usually suffer from hip dysplasia, eye problems, and other minor disorders. It is important to buy a puppy from a good breeding line, where the rate of these diseases is not high.
Various certificates and pedigrees will give you an idea not only about a Mastiff puppies' health condition, but will also make you aware of their background. Parent dogs that have happened to be winners of prestigious shows and other trials will likely produce sound progeny. Good inherited features are necessary for Mastiffs whose owners see them as champions in the future.
However, perfect background is only of success, if not less. Other significant characteristics depend much on a Mastiff owner. To have a well-balanced Mastiff dog it is necessary to raise it properly. It includes adequate control, regular veterinary care, training, and other constituents. It seems to be a complex task, even for those owners who have been around dogs for some time. Needless to say, inexperienced owners will hardly manage raising of a Mastiff puppy single-handed. A breeder should be always willing to supply help in the future. Find out also, if the breeder is ready to re-home your Mastiff in case something does not work out.
The last thing to remember, but certainly not the least is the following, "Nothing valuable is achieved overnight." It may take time to find a Mastiff you are looking for. High quality puppies can also turn out to be expensive. Yet, your efforts will be rewarded once you have acquired a wonderful dog that is going to be a worthy citizen in the world of Mastiffs.
